I think we have some seriously intelligent chickens here! Granted, I've never had chickens before. I have no idea how they are supposed to advance through their age-appropriate milestones. All I know is that these girls have only been here a week and they have not only learned how to come down from their coop in the morning, they now know how to tuck themselves into their coop at night!
After I closed them in for the night, I stood by for a few minutes and listened. There was a lot of ruckus for about 5 minutes until they decided who would get to sleep on the top roost, then they settled down and all was quiet. If I had to guess who was going to be top in the pecking order, my bet would be on Ginger; although, Nutmeg sure does know how to give her a run for her money! Only time will tell, I guess.

My Grandma raised chickens and sold the eggs to all the local stores. She loved her hens and would often remark about how intelligent a chicken was.
SVB....I agree with your grandma. These are some smart birds! Right now, though, I am wondering...they prefer to stand out in the fog and rain rather than go up to their nice, warm coop! Silly girls.
As we were driving to Colorado, I told Don all about your girls and their names! I even remembered them!!! :)
Morning Bray...Wow, I'm impressed that you remembered all the girls' names! So sorry we didn't get to meet during your recent trip. One day.
Your girls are so pretty! And smart! I'm so happy everyone is settling in for you. That coop is to DIE for! Bless Neal's heart - he outdid himself for sure!
Penny, the girls are adorable, aren't they? Yes, Neal did a fabulous job on the coop. I am very happy with it. I'm still trying to convince him he's talented enough to build us a house, but he's not buying that one!
Having chickens for a year now I agree that they are really intelligent. My girlies have a routine and I had BETTER stick to it! lol
Didn't think I would ever enjoy chickens so much, but they sure are wonderful. And the eggs being a bonus!
AJ-OAKS, I never thought I'd enjoy chickens so much either, but they are very entertaining creatures. And, you're right, those eggs are a nice bonus. Can't wait for our first ones!
