History Made

I'm still in a state of shock regarding the Presidential election. Being the optimistic, think-outside-the-box-type, I had always hoped to be alive to see an African American or a woman become President, but I wasn't holding my breath that either would happen in my lifetime. I sat fixated before the television last night, watching the polling results, McCain's concession speech and Obama's victory speech, from start to finish. And I was in complete and total awe of the historical milestone that unfolded before my eyes. I have never been involved or very interested in politics. As a matter of fact, I adhere to the policy of not talking politics or religion in mixed company, however, there was something about this campaign that sucked me in and had me following it every step of the way. It has nothing to do with being Democrat or a Republican. I am a registered Independent and I like it that way. I vote for the person not the party. I do not consider myself exclusively liberal or exclusively conservative.

I am an American who wants what is best for America. Will President-Elect Obama be what is best for America? Some say no, some say absolutely. I say I sure hope and pray so. One thing I think we can all agree on is that we have just witnessed a new chapter being written in American History and we're in for one interesting ride. Mr. Obama, I hope you eat your Wheaties!

Other positive newsworthy information - especially for my animal-loving friends - is that the state of Massachusetts voted to ban Greyhound racing by 2010 and the state of California voted to ban factory farming confinement systems by 2015.

History was never my favorite subject in school. But these days, I'm really enjoying being a part of the legacy of this great country.

Yes, a truly historical event in our lifetime that has moved many, myself included.

I am with you. I too am an independent. While the republicans are springing up websites labled "steps to bring back G.O.P power," I am actually allowing myself to appreciate what has happened. I am so sick of party lines and the "power" they feel they have to yield. It's time to be about the PEOPLE for a change.

I'll never forget my mother calling me in tears as she said the following: "I cannot believe I have lived to see a colored president! I remember when blacks gained the right to vote and many were killed and beaten for trying to vote! This is one of the happiest days of my life!"

I couldn't help but have a better appreciation after I heard that...

Hot belly - wow, what an experience for you and your mother. If my own parents were still alive, I know they would be very proud of this moment in history. My father was actually an Assistant Dean at Grambling State University, a predominantly black school in Louisiana, during the latter years of his career and he was very proud to be part of breaking down racial barriers. My parents were both social workers and although they were raised in times of racial strife, they raised me to appreciate the value of a person irregardless of skin color. For that I am truly grateful.

Compostwoman, welcome to my blog and thank you for your comment. I just briefly browsed your blog and am thrilled to find a fellow composter and simple liver with whom to correspond. I can't wait to read more of your posts!
