The Loss of Sanctity

sanctity - the quality of something considered so holy or important it must be respected totally.

Last night, I listened in horror as the newscaster told of another senseless killing spree at a church - this one in Tennessee. Just a few months ago, in a very similar fashion, our town lost two sisters when a crazed gunman went on a rampage at New Life Church. The pastor of that church was interviewed last night regarding the Tennessee shooting and a comment he made really hit me hard. His sentiments were such that he said he really thought it was important for all churches to employ security guards these days. And, as I skimmed through the online news this morning, there was an interview with the former security manager of the New Life Church, who now runs his own company specializing in church and school security. He was quoted as saying, "You have to have a plan in place, you have to have your people prepared for an active shooter and for all kinds of things."

Sad. Frightening. Unbelievable. To think that we can't even go to our chosen houses of worship and feel safe without the presence of armed security guards standing watch. At times like these, I'm glad we don't have children. I'm not sure I could adequately explain how and why such evil lurks among us.
